Wärtsilä 32 Cylinder block

The Wärtsilä 32 block is cast in one piece from nodular cast iron regardless of the number of cylinders, and houses both the camshaft bearing housings and the charge air receiver; on V-engines the latter sits between the two cylinder banks. The main bearing caps are fixed from below with hydraulically tensioned bolts and guided sideways by the block at both top and bottom, giving a particularly rigid crankshaft bearing arrangement.

A distinctive feature of this block is the hydraulic jack built into the oil sump, which lowers and lifts the main bearing caps during inspection without needing full disassembly; the same jack also feeds lubricating oil to the bearings and the piston. Any deviation in the block's flatness or alignment carries through into this jack arrangement and, from there, into the entire bearing chain.
