Wärtsilä 32 Crankshaft

The crankshaft of the Wärtsilä 32 is forged in one piece and mounted in the block in an under-slung arrangement; on the V-versions, the connecting rods of both cylinder banks sit side by side on the same crank pin, increasing standardisation between the in-line and V engines. The crankshaft is fully balanced to counteract bearing loads from eccentric masses.

Where necessary, the crankshaft is fitted with a torsional vibration damper at the free end; if this damping is missing or no longer functioning correctly, torsional vibrations can build up precisely in the crank pins that already carry the highest load. Precision measurement of crank pin diameters and alignment therefore remains a standard step in our inspection procedure.
