Alongside the engine-driven main pump, the Wärtsilä 34 can also be fitted with an electrically driven lube oil pump that pressurises and circulates the lubricating oil independently of the engine's own speed. That makes this pump particularly suited to situations where the engine isn't running yet but already needs to be under oil pressure, or has just stopped and still needs a moment of continued lubrication.
On a dual-fuel engine that stops and restarts with some regularity, every second of early oil pressure counts; an electric pump that doesn't reach full capacity undermines exactly that advantage. The pump's safety valve therefore deserves attention at every reconditioning.
