Product Description
Like other engines in this product line, the Wärtsilä 34 block is cast in one piece from nodular cast iron and houses the camshaft bearing housings and the charge air receiver; on the V-versions the latter sits between the two cylinder banks. This makes the block the single most decisive component for the alignment of almost everything else.
On a dual-fuel engine there's an added dimension: the switching between operating modes produces a slightly different thermal and mechanical loading pattern than on a pure diesel version, which adds weight to keeping the main bearing caps and cylinder bores stably and precisely aligned. A block deformed at just one point carries that deformation through the entire bearing chain, regardless of which fuel the engine happens to be running on.
