The air cooler of the Wärtsilä Vasa 32 cools the air compressed by the turbocharger before it enters the cylinders, and in doing so helps determine the power output and fuel efficiency of this older engine generation.
On engines of this age, fouling of the cooling fins from long-term operation is one of the most common causes of gradually declining power, often without being immediately recognised as a cooler issue. Periodic cleaning and a leak-tightness test are therefore among the most cost-effective checks you can have carried out on this engine.
