Product Description
The torsional vibration damper of the MAN 21/31 is fitted at the free end of the crankshaft and damps the torsional vibrations that arise with every combustion stroke in this engine's long, multi-cylinder crankshaft. Without this damping, torsional vibrations could build up to levels that eventually damage the crankshaft.
A worn or hardened damper gradually loses its damping effect, often without this being immediately audible or visible; only with sustained exposure to undamped vibration does the load on the crankshaft and bearings become noticeably higher. Periodic inspection of the damper is therefore a valuable preventive measure, especially on the longer 8- and 9-cylinder versions.
