Product Description
The crankshaft of the MAN 21/31 is stiff and robustly built, with large crank pin diameters for a large bearing surface and finely tuned counterweights on every crank web to minimise vibration. At a nominal speed of 900 or 1000 rpm, the crankshaft has to reliably absorb this engine's high combustion pressures, up to 200 bar.
Because the base frame of this engine also serves as the lube oil reservoir, the crankshaft sits permanently within a shared oil system; precise alignment and surface quality of the crank pins are therefore essential to prevent bearing damage, especially on the longer crankshafts of the 8- and 9-cylinder versions.
