Product Description
The idler gear connects the crankshaft to the MAN 16/24's two separate camshafts, keeping both valve actuation and fuel injection running exactly in sync with the crankshaft despite being two physically distinct drives.
Play in this gear carries through to the timing of both camshafts at once, and can show up as a subtle shift between valve actuation and injection timing well before it's recognised as a clear fault. Checking gear backlash is therefore a standard part of our inspection.
