Product Description
The lube oil pump of the Wärtsilä 38 brings the oil to a nominal pressure of around 450 kPa at the engine inlet, after which it passes through an automatic fine filter with a mesh size of typically 10 microns and a coarser safety filter of 25 microns before reaching the bearings and other lubrication points.
On an engine of this size, with a considerably larger oil volume and more bearings than the smaller Wärtsilä types, any deviation in pump output has a heavier knock-on effect: a declining pressure doesn't affect just one bearing but a whole series of them spread along a longer crankshaft. Wear in the pump element is therefore something to catch early, not only once the pressure drop becomes noticeable.
