Product Description
With a cylinder bore of 380 mm and a stroke of 475 mm, the Wärtsilä 38 belongs to a considerably heavier class than the smaller Wärtsilä engines, and that shows directly in the cylinder head: each head serves two inlet and two exhaust valves and has to absorb the correspondingly higher combustion pressures of this large, straight-diesel design.
Unlike the dual-fuel variants in the Wärtsilä family, the W38 runs solely on direct injection of liquid fuel, which keeps the cylinder head's media routing relatively simple: charge air, exhaust gas and cooling water, with no separate gas channels. That doesn't change the fact that the valve seats and cooling channels on this larger head carry a correspondingly higher load and deserve extra attention during inspection.
